AMERICAN SOCIETY ON AGING OFFERS ONLINE EDUCATION FOR PROFESSIONALS SUPPORTING FAMILY CAREGIVERS
ASA is pleased to present two free web events to address the issue of family caregiving. The first event is a web-hosted chat wherein leaders in the field will address policy issues, after which they will answer questions from participants. The second event is a web seminar, which will address some of the major issues faced by these caregivers and ways that professionals can address them effectively.
Policy Trends to Support Family Caregivers (60-minute Web-hosted chat) September 14, 2004; 10:00 AM Pacific time/1:00 PM Eastern time. Beginning on Wednesday, September 15, the program will be available on demand (24 hours a day). Presenters: Kathleen Kelly, MPA, Executive Director, Family Caregiver Alliance, San Francisco, CA; Robyn Golden, MA, LCSW, Heinz Fellow, Office of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Washington, DC; Gail Hunt, President and CEO, National Alliance for Caregiving, Bethesda, MD. This event is a web-hosted chat where the presenters will discuss the important policy issues around family caregiving at the state and federal levels. Emerging trends and underlying philosophies will be highlighted. Specific examples of best practices and new initiatives related to caregiver support services, consumer direction, family leave policies, etc., will be provided.
Family Caregiving: Current Challenges for a Time-Honored Practice (Web seminar) September 21, 2004; 10:00 AM Pacific time/1:00 PM Eastern time. Beginning on Wednesday, September 22, the program will be available on demand (24 hours a day). Presenters: Kathleen Kelly, MPA, Executive Director, Family Caregiver Alliance, San Francisco, CA; Helene Ebenstein, MSW, Coordinator, CAPP Caregiver Resource Center, Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, NY; Carol Levine, MA, Director, Families & Health Care Project, United Hospital Fund, New York, NY. This session will focus on some of the dilemmas and opportunities facing clinicians who work with family caregivers in today's resource-constrained health care and social service systems. After an introduction about the challenges faced by caregivers today that were not known only a few decades ago, three areas will be featured: how to help family caregivers self-identify and take advantage of available resources; the spiritual gifts and burdens of caregiving, and the use of the Internet as a resource for caregivers.

C.A.R.E.-Pro is a cooperative agreement between the American Society on Aging and the Administration on Aging. Through this agreement ASA is collaborating with the American Nurses Association, the American Occupational Therapy Association, and the National Association of Social Workers to increase the skills and knowledge of those who are providing support for family caregivers.
