AARP to Discuss the Future of Health Care for Boomers

AARP held the second in a series of forums aimed at America's decision makers, "2020 Vision Forum: Boomers and Health Care of the Future." The focus of the discussion was on breakthrough medicines, treatments and technologies that will impact the health of Boomers.

AARP Board of Directors Member, Mary Scott, hosted a panel discussion of experts in science and health, moderated by Dr. Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman in space. Panelists included Dr. John Charles, deputy chief scientist for Bioastronautics, NASA Johnson Space Center, Dr. Jeff Goldsmith, president, Health Futures Inc, Dr. David Pate, senior vice president and CEO, St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital and Dr. Jennifer West, director, Institute of Bioscience and Bioengineering, Rice University.

Scott said, "With this event and the influence of its participants, AARP is charting the course of the health of Boomers, and hopefully, acting as a catalyst for change. We could not think of a better place to hold a forward-looking discussion on Boomers' well-being than NASA."

With the recent passing of the Health Information Technology Promotion Act (H.R. 4157), the panel touched upon the impact of health information technology systems in patient care. AARP feels it imperative that Congress move to enact serious legislation that will advance health IT programs, while ensuring that patients' rights to privacy are protected. AARP also applauded the Houston area as a center of innovation, both through the research conducted in life sciences at the NASA Johnson Space Center and within academia, as the city continues to be a burgeoning center of nanotechnology research.

At this 2020 Vision Forum, business, academic and community leaders heard new developments in health care and its delivery, notably how it will affect the 70 million strong Boomer generation. An interactive discussion examined how scientific advancement will drive better preventive care, diagnostic testing, telemedicine and other innovation.

The 2020 Vision Forum is a series produced by AARP. The first 2020 Vision Forum, on the future of the workplace, was held in New York in April. Future 2020 Vision events will focus on how the baby-boom generation will transform technology, housing, political power and entertainment arenas as they age.

About AARP's 2020 Vision Forums: AARP's 2020 Vision Forums take an optimistic look at the ideas and trends shaping the 70 million-strong Boomer generation. The forums convene an elite audience of U.S. opinion leaders, including policymakers, members of the business community, NGOs, and others, for frank and interactive discussions on what the future will look like for Boomers. In addition to "Boomers and Health Care of the Future," AARP will explore issues in employment, technology, housing and political activism at forums in 2006 around the country.
